How are we repurposing materials from Casa Tocoton to carry out a renovation that preserves traditional elements?

In this post, we explain how the work is progressing, focusing on one particular feature of the building that has completely transformed! Want to know what it is? If you reach the last photo, you'll find out!

1. The wall on the right is the one that ended up uncovered after removing the wardrobe.

2. The wall is made of earth, and if it's not well sealed, the earth crumbles, the space fills with dust, and both the wall and other elements of the building are damaged. That's why it's important to refill the holes with putty. This is the wall where the closet was, which we removed to create a more spacious area. It was a huge closet used to store futons (Japanese-style beds). It's hard to repurpose it, as these types of closets are very deep and not practical for storing other types of items. After removing the closet, holes appeared in the wall, and we decided to renovate it, giving it back its original look.

3. The putty used to re-smooth the wall.

4. This is the bench the carpenters made using the wood from the futon closet! They repurposed the large shelf that separated the two sections of the closet and added four legs, also made from the same wood. We want to use furniture in a Japanese style that doesn't take up too much height since the ceiling is low. If we placed, for example, a Western-style table and chairs, the space would look much smaller. Additionally, we think it’s better for the workshops related to Japanese culture to have furniture that aligns with the atmosphere we want to create at Casa Tocoton.

We would like to share with you the photos we took over the past few days at Casa Tocoton. While there are still a few days left until the renovation is fully complete, we believe you can already feel its spaciousness and atmosphere! We aim to preserve as many original features as possible, striving to give Casa Tocoton the appearance of a traditional urban house. For this reason, we are keeping the glass shoji (sliding doors), the gaps above the glass shoji, the columns, and the wall colors unchanged. The most significant renovation involves replacing the tatami mats, which had rotted and become unsafe to bear heavy loads. Additionally, we plan to use lighting that is not too intense to maintain a typical Showa-era ambiance. As the renovation progresses, we will keep updating you on Casa Tocoton’s transformation. We hope you enjoy this type of content!

2. On the left side, there used to be a closet, which is no longer there… It was a deep closet used to store futons (Japanese bedding). Since we needed a large space to carry out all the activities we have planned and won’t be using futons, we decided it was best to remove it.

Who are we?

Casa Tocoton is a cultural and artistic space created by us, Ryo and Anna. Ryo was born in Osaka, and Anna in Catalonia. In 2022, we started this project by opening the ceramics studio located right next to Casa Tocoton. Ryo had been working as a freelance web designer for 10 years, and we both decided to expand the business by starting to produce ceramic pieces and offering workshops for locals and travellers.

We became a design and ceramics company, and little by little, we got to know more and more people, most of whom were interested in culture, human relationships, and art. In 2024, we were given the opportunity to open a new space for activities beyond ceramics. We thought about all the people who had come to the studio to do ceramics, as well as those we met through the commissions Ryo receives for various design projects, many of whom often asked where they could participate in activities related to Japan, Catalonia, or simply something creative to meet others and have a good time.

We also thought about the people who live in the Ikuno neighborhood, where Casa Tocoton and our studio, Ceramics Tocoton, are located, and we decided that having a space where people could gather, enjoy art, or discuss the needs of the neighborhood would be very positive. This is how Casa Tocoton was born, from this spirit of connecting culture, art, and people.

We’ve been working on our project for a long time now, and along the way, we’ve received tremendous support from our families, friends, and people who have taken an interest in what we do. Many of you who ask about our company know that another reason we started this project was to secure a visa for Anna. We’re a couple living in Osaka without the possibility of getting married, as Japan, unfortunately, does not yet integrate the LGBTQ+ community into its society. Our way of obtaining a visa has been to make our projects work as a business, with all the advantages and disadvantages that entails.
